Why Rochester Homeowners Choose Asphalt Shingle Roofing

More than 80% of homes across the United States use asphalt shingles, and that number is even higher in Western New York. The reasons are straightforward: asphalt shingles offer strong protection at a price point that works for most budgets, they come in dozens of colors and profiles, and they perform well in climates that throw everything from ice storms to humid summers at your roof.

Rochester sees an average of 100 inches of snow each winter. Add freeze-thaw cycles that can start as early as October and stretch into April, heavy wind off Lake Ontario, and summer storms that regularly produce hail, and your roof takes a beating that homeowners in milder climates simply don't experience. That's exactly why the quality of your shingles and the skill of your installer matter more here than almost anywhere else.

At Carter Exteriors, we specialize in asphalt shingle roof replacement for homeowners across Rochester, Henrietta, Webster, Penfield, Pittsford, and the surrounding Monroe County communities. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we install shingle systems that are purpose-built for our climate, and we back every project with warranties that give you real peace of mind.

If your roof is showing signs of age, has storm damage, or you're simply tired of calling for repairs every year, this page will walk you through everything you need to know about asphalt shingle repair and replacement in the Rochester area.

Roof Repair vs. Roof Replacement: How to Know What Your Home Needs

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is: "Can my roof be repaired, or do I need a full replacement?" The honest answer depends on several factors, and a quick visual inspection from the ground won't give you the full picture. Here's a practical guide to help you evaluate where your roof stands.

When Repairs May Be Enough

A targeted roof inspection might show that repairs are the right move if:

  • Your roof is less than 15 years old, and the damage is isolated to a small area
  • Only a few shingles are missing or cracked after a windstorm
  • A single leak has been traced to a specific point, such as damaged flashing around a chimney or vent
  • The underlying decking is dry and structurally sound
  • The rest of the roof shows no significant granule loss, curling, or wear

In these cases, a professional repair can extend the useful life of your roof by several years without the cost of a full replacement.

When Replacement Is the Better Investment

Replacement becomes the smarter choice when the cost of ongoing repairs starts to add up, or when the damage is widespread enough that patching won't solve the underlying problem. Consider a full roof installation if:

  • Your roof is 20+ years old. Most three-tab shingles reach the end of their lifespan between 15 and 20 years. Architectural shingles can last 25 to 30 years, but Rochester's weather often shortens that window.
  • You're seeing widespread granule loss. Check your gutters. If they're filling with dark, sandy granules, your shingles are losing the protective layer that blocks UV damage and water penetration.
  • Shingles are curling, buckling, or cracking across multiple areas. This isn't a spot-fix situation. It means the shingle material itself is failing.
  • You've had multiple leaks in different locations. One leak is a repair. Three leaks in two years is a roof telling you it's done.
  • There's visible sagging or soft spots on the roof deck. This suggests moisture damage to the underlying structure, which requires a tear-off to properly assess and fix.
  • You've already spent significant money on repairs recently. At some point, repair costs exceed the value you're getting from an aging roof. A new roof resets the clock completely.
  • Storm damage affects more than 30% of the roof surface. Insurance adjusters often recommend replacement once damage crosses this threshold, and your storm damage claim may cover most or all of the cost.

What Batavia roofs are up against

Not all asphalt shingles are created equal, and in a market like Rochester, the shingle you choose will directly affect how long your roof lasts and how well it handles our winters. That's why Carter Exteriors installs Owens Corning Duration shingles as our standard recommendation for residential roof replacement.

Warranty Protection

Because Carter Exteriors holds Owens Corning Preferred Contractor status, we can offer warranty coverage that goes beyond what a standard installer can provide. This includes:

  • Lifetime limited warranty on shingle materials
  • Extended manufacturer workmanship coverage
  • System-level protection when a full Owens Corning roofing system is installed (shingles, underlayment, ventilation, and hip and ridge caps)

This is a manufacturer-backed guarantee that ties directly to the quality of installation, which is why Owens Corning only extends these terms to contractors who meet their training and performance standards.

Why Duration Shingles Perform in Rochester Weather

Owens Corning engineered the Duration series specifically for high-performance residential roofing. Here's what sets them apart:

  • SureNail Technology: A proprietary fabric strip built into the nailing zone that provides up to 130 MPH wind resistance. This is a measurable advantage in Western New York, where lake-effect storms and nor'easters can push sustained winds well past 60 MPH.
  • Triple Layer Protection: The SureNail strip creates a reinforced bond between the shingle and the nail, reducing the risk of blow-offs and improving overall hold during extreme weather events.
  • Algae Resistance: Duration shingles include StreakGuard protection that prevents the black streaking caused by algae growth, keeping your roof looking clean for years.
  • Dimensional Profile: These are architectural-grade shingles with a thick, textured appearance that adds curb appeal and mimics the look of natural wood shake or slate at a fraction of the cost.
  • Color Options: Owens Corning offers the TruDefinition Color Platform with colors like Estate Gray, Brownwood, Onyx Black, Sand Dune, and Quarry Gray, all of which complement the architectural styles common across Rochester's neighborhoods.

Types of Asphalt Shingles We Install

Asphalt shingles aren't a one-size-fits-all product. The type you select affects your roof's appearance, longevity, performance, and total project cost. Here's a breakdown of the options available for your Rochester home.

  • Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles

Architectural shingles are the most popular choice for residential roof replacement in Monroe County, and for good reason. They feature a multi-layered construction that creates a dimensional, textured look on the roof surface. Compared to basic shingles, architectural options are heavier, more wind-resistant, and significantly longer-lasting.

Lifespan: 25 to 30 years (often longer with proper ventilation and maintenance) Wind Rating: Up to 130 MPH with products like the Owens Corning Duration Best For: Most Rochester homes, especially those looking for the best balance of durability, appearance, and cost
  • Designer and Premium Shingles

Designer shingles take the architectural concept further with enhanced color blends, heavier weights, and profiles that closely replicate the look of natural slate, cedar shake, or old-world European tile. These products are ideal for homeowners who want their roof to make a statement.

Lifespan: 30 to 50 years Appearance: Premium color blends with deeper shadow lines and richer visual depth Best For: Higher-end homes, historic properties in neighborhoods like Pittsford and Fairport, or any homeowner who prioritizes curb appeal
  • Three-Tab Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the traditional flat-profile option that was standard on American homes for decades. They're lighter and thinner than architectural shingles, with a uniform appearance. While they cost less upfront, they also offer shorter lifespans and less wind resistance.

Lifespan: 15 to 20 years Wind Rating: Typically 60 to 70 MPH Best For: Budget-conscious projects, rental properties, or situations where the roof will be replaced again within a shorter timeframe

Most homeowners we work with across Rochester and the surrounding areas choose architectural shingles for the best long-term value. During your estimate, we'll walk you through samples, color options, and pricing for each type so you can choose with confidence.

Roofing for Rochester Weather: What Your Roof Is Really Up Against

Rochester consistently ranks among the snowiest cities in the United States. But snow is only one piece of the puzzle. Your roof has to handle a combination of conditions that, together, create one of the most demanding residential roofing environments in the Northeast.

Heavy Rain and Summer Storms

Summer in Rochester brings its own challenges. Thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, and strong wind gusts can damage shingles, strip granules, and create conditions for leaks that don't show up until the next heavy rain. If your roof is already aging, a single severe summer storm can push it past the point of repair.

Ventilation and Moisture Control

A properly vented attic is one of the most overlooked components of a Rochester roofing system. Without balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, warm moist air gets trapped in the attic space, accelerating shingle deterioration from underneath, promoting mold and mildew growth, and worsening ice dam formation in winter. Every roof replacement we perform includes a ventilation assessment to make sure your new system is set up for long-term performance.

Building a roof that handles all of these conditions requires more than just good shingles. It takes a complete system: quality underlayment, properly installed ice and water shield, adequate ventilation, durable flashing, and skilled installation. That's the approach Carter Exteriors takes on every project.

Our Roof Replacement Process: What to Expect

Replacing a roof is one of the biggest investments you'll make in your home, and the process shouldn't feel stressful or uncertain. Here's exactly how a roof replacement works with Carter Exteriors, from first call to final walkthrough.

Free Roof Inspection

We start with a thorough roof inspection at no cost. One of our specialists will examine your roof's condition from the ground and on the roof itself, checking for missing or damaged shingles, flashing issues, ventilation problems, and signs of structural concern. You'll receive a detailed report with photos.

Written Estimate

Based on the inspection findings, we'll provide a clear, itemized estimate that covers materials, labor, and any additional work needed (decking repairs, ventilation upgrades, etc.). No vague numbers, no surprise fees. You'll know exactly what you're paying for before we schedule anything.

Material Selection

We'll walk you through your shingle options, including color samples, profiles, and warranty tiers. If you're choosing Owens Corning Duration shingles (which most of our customers do), we'll help you select the color that best complements your home's exterior.

Scheduling

Once you approve the estimate and select your materials, we schedule your project at a date that works for you. We keep our scheduling transparent and communicate clearly if weather or other factors require any adjustments.

Tear-Off and Deck Inspection

On installation day, our crew removes the existing roofing material down to the deck. This is a critical step because it lets us inspect the plywood sheathing for water damage, rot, or soft spots. If we find issues, we'll repair or replace damaged sections before moving forward, and we'll communicate any changes in scope immediately.

Installation

We install your new roofing system using manufacturer-recommended techniques. This includes ice and water shield along all eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, starter strips, field shingles, ridge ventilation, and new flashing at all penetrations. Every detail follows Owens Corning's specifications for warranty-qualifying installation.

Cleanup

When the roofing work is complete, we clean the entire property. That means magnetic sweeps for nails in the driveway, yard, and walkways, removal of all debris, and hauling away old materials. You won't find leftover shingle wrappers in your flower beds.

Final Walkthrough

Before we consider the job finished, we do a final walkthrough with you. We'll point out the key features of your new roof, answer any questions, and make sure you're completely satisfied. Your warranty documentation follows shortly after.

What Affects the Cost of Roof Replacement in Rochester?

Every roof is different, which is why there's no one-size-fits-all price for a roof replacement. Here are the main factors that influence your project cost:

  • Roof Size: Measured in "squares" (one square equals 100 square feet). A larger roof simply requires more materials and more labor.
  • Roof Pitch (Steepness): Steeper roofs require additional safety equipment, take longer to install, and are more labor-intensive. A steep pitch can noticeably increase your total cost.
  • Shingle Selection: Three-tab shingles cost less per square than architectural shingles, which cost less than designer or premium options. The difference shows up in both material and labor pricing.
  • Decking Condition: If the plywood sheathing underneath your old shingles is rotted, water-damaged, or structurally compromised, it needs to be replaced before new shingles go on. This is an additional but necessary cost.
  • Ventilation Requirements: Adding or upgrading ridge vents, soffit vents, or attic fans to meet current building code and manufacturer warranty requirements can add to the project scope.
  • Flashing and Penetrations: The more chimneys, skylights, plumbing vents, and HVAC penetrations your roof has, the more flashing work is involved.
  • Roof Detailing: Multiple valleys, dormers, hip sections, and varying roof planes add complexity that increases both labor and material requirements.
  • Accessibility: Can our crew easily access the roof with ladders and equipment? Homes with landscaping close to the house, limited driveway space, or multi-story configurations may require additional logistics.
  • Tear-Off Layers: If your home has two or more layers of existing shingles (common in older Rochester homes), the tear-off takes longer and produces more waste for disposal.

We provide detailed, itemized estimates so you know exactly what each component costs. If anything changes during the project, we will communicate it immediately and get your approval before proceeding.

Warranties That Actually Protect You

A warranty is only as strong as the company standing behind it and the manufacturer backing the product. At Carter Exteriors, we structure our warranties to give you real, enforceable protection.

Material Warranty

Owens Corning Duration shingles come with a lifetime limited material warranty that covers manufacturing defects for as long as you own your home. This isn't a prorated warranty that shrinks in value over time; it's coverage that holds up when you actually need it.

Workmanship Warranty

We stand behind our installation work. If a problem arises because of how the roof was installed, we come back and fix it. Period. Our workmanship warranty covers the labor and craftsmanship that goes into every project.

System-Level Protection

When we install a complete Owens Corning roofing system (shingles, underlayment, starter strips, ventilation, and hip and ridge caps from the same manufacturer), you qualify for enhanced warranty coverage that extends beyond the individual components. This system-level approach is one of the key advantages of working with a certified Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.

Why Certified Installation Matters

Here's something many homeowners don't realize: a manufacturer's warranty can be voided if the shingles aren't installed according to their specifications. Using the wrong nail pattern, improper underlayment, or skipping ventilation requirements can all compromise your coverage. Our Owens Corning certification means we install every component the way it was designed to be installed, which keeps your warranty fully intact.

Why Rochester Homeowners Choose Carter Exteriors

There's no shortage of roofing contractors in Rochester. So why do homeowners across Monroe County keep choosing Carter Exteriors? Here's what sets us apart:

  • Owens Corning Preferred Contractor: This designation means we've met Owens Corning's standards for training, quality, and customer satisfaction. It also means we can offer warranty coverage most contractors can't.
  • 200+ Five-Star Reviews: Our reputation is built on real feedback from real homeowners in Rochester, Henrietta, Webster, Greece, Pittsford, and the surrounding communities. We earn every review by doing the job right.
  • Clear Communication: You'll know who's coming to your home, when the work will happen, and what to expect at every stage. We answer our phones, return messages, and keep you informed throughout the project.
  • Clean Job Sites: We treat your property with respect. Magnetic nail sweeps, thorough debris removal, and daily cleanup are standard on every project, not something you have to ask for.
  • Honest Assessments: If your roof can be repaired instead of replaced, we'll tell you. We'd rather earn your trust with a $500 repair than push you into a $15,000 replacement you don't need yet.
  • Local Knowledge: We live and work in Rochester. We understand the weather, the building codes, the common roofing issues in this area, and how to build roofs that hold up season after season.
  • Quality Craftsmanship: No shortcuts, no subcontractors brought in from out of town. Our crews are experienced, trained, and accountable for the work they do on your home.

I highly recommend this company. They came to my house at night on an emergency call when I had water leaking into my kitchen. They diagnosed and fixed it in the rain, in the dark. Very professional and fair price.

High level, yes I would definitely recommend Carter. Price, knowledge, quality of work, cleanup, all great. I am usually squeamish going with the low quote. Really paid off this time.

More detailed:
The sales process was great. It wasn't some random 20-something who had never been on a roof. Jim knew the business and process. I wanted a metal roof. He could have just gone with it but instead he really questioned me about why that was what I wanted. He wanted to be sure I would get the value out of the more expensive option. I even received a quote for a traditional asphalt roof in addition to the metal. They are out to get you the right solution for your application rather than the most expensive option.

I made the mistake of scheduling in the fall so project start got pushed a few times but that wasn't Carter's fault. They were pretty good about getting back to me when I called and didn't mind answering the same questions multiple times. Both Jim and the owner Austin were on site throughout the installation and cleanup to be sure everything was done right.

Overall, great quality, great experience.

We contacted four contractors for estimates and Carter Exteriors was the best deal. Their communication and customer service was outstanding. We had 20 square of shingles and 20 sheets of sheathing replaced. Their crew arrived at 7:30. They were curtious, polite, hard working. The roll off was in our driveway for less than 24 hours. All materials were delivered and installed the same day. Yard and gardens were cleaned and any evidence of a roof job were eliminated. The attention to detail regarding step flashing and double flashing around chimney were excellent. I would hire and recommend their company for any exterior job.

Frequently Asked Questions About Asphalt Shingle Roof Repair

1How long does a roof replacement take?
Most residential roof replacements in Rochester are completed in one to two days, depending on the size of the home, the roof's complexity, and weather conditions. Larger or more complex projects may take three days. We'll give you a clear timeline during the estimate process.
2How do I know if my roof needs to be replaced or just repaired?
If your roof is under 15 years old and the damage is limited to a small area, repairs may be sufficient. If you're seeing widespread granule loss, curling shingles, multiple leaks, or your roof is approaching 20 to 25 years old, replacement is typically the better investment. A professional roof inspection is the best way to get a clear answer.
3Will my homeowner's insurance cover roof replacement?
If your roof was damaged by a covered event like a storm, hail, or fallen tree, your insurance policy may cover part or all of the replacement cost. Carter Exteriors works with all major insurance carriers and can help you through the claims process from inspection to final documentation.
4What are ice dams, and how does a new roof help prevent them?
Ice dams form when heat from your attic melts snow on the upper roof, and the meltwater refreezes at the colder eaves. This creates a dam that forces water under your shingles and into your home. During a roof replacement, we install ice and water shield along all eaves and valleys and assess your attic ventilation to reduce the conditions that cause ice dams in the first place
5Can I put new shingles over my old roof?
While it's technically possible to install a second layer of shingles over an existing roof, we don't recommend it. Layering hides potential decking damage, adds excessive weight to the structure, reduces the lifespan of the new shingles, and can void manufacturer warranties. A proper tear-off is always the better approach.
6What time of year is best for roof replacement in Rochester?
Late spring through early fall (May through October) is the ideal window for roof replacement in Western New York. The warmer temperatures help shingle sealant strips bond properly. However, if your roof is actively leaking or severely damaged, we can perform emergency work year-round to protect your home.
7Do I need to be home during the roof replacement?
You don't need to be home for the entire project, but we recommend being available at the start for any questions and at the end for the final walkthrough. We'll communicate throughout the day via phone or text so you always know how things are progressing.
