Types of Storm Damage That Affect Rochester Roofs

Here's what our inspection team looks for after Rochester storms, and why each type requires a different repair approach.

Ice and Snow Damage

Rochester winters bring significant snow accumulation and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Ice dams form along eaves when heat escaping from the attic melts snow on the upper roof, and the meltwater refreezes at the colder eaves. The resulting ice ridge traps water behind it, forcing moisture under shingles and into the roof structure.

Heavy snow loads also stress the decking and framing, especially on older homes. After winter storms, we inspect for ice dam evidence, water stains in soffits, and structural stress indicators that may not be visible from the ground.

Fallen Trees and Debris

A fallen branch or tree limb can puncture through shingles, underlayment, and decking in a single impact. This creates an immediate safety hazard and leaves a direct opening for water. Even smaller debris impacts can crack shingles or shift them out of alignment.

Our emergency response includes careful debris removal (without causing additional damage), temporary tarping to seal the opening, and a full assessment of structural integrity before permanent repairs begin.

Not sure what type of damage your roof sustained? Call 585-438-7663, and we will schedule a post-storm roof inspection  to find out.

Our Emergency Roof Repair Response Process

When you call Carter Exteriors after a storm, we follow an organized process designed to stabilize your home fast and move toward a lasting repair efficiently.

Insurance Coordination

We work directly with your insurance adjuster, share our documentation, and make sure the damage assessment aligns with what actually needs to be fixed. More on this below.

Permanent Repairs and Final Inspection

Once materials are sourced and weather allows, our crew completes the full repair, matching existing roofing materials and restoring your roof system's integrity. After repairs, we do a walk-through with you to confirm everything meets our standards and yours.

Navigating Roof Insurance Claims After Storm Damage

Carter Exteriors has worked alongside homeowners on dozens of roofing insurance claims in the Rochester area. Here's a clear walkthrough of what to do.

  • Immediately after the storm: Document visible damage from the ground using your phone. Take wide-angle photos of your roof from each side of the house, plus close-ups of any debris, downed branches, or visible shingle damage. Photograph any interior water stains or leaks with timestamps.
  • Take temporary mitigation steps: Most homeowner policies require you to prevent further damage. Placing buckets under leaks, moving furniture away from wet areas, and having a contractor tarp exposed sections all count as reasonable mitigation. Keep receipts for any supplies or emergency services you pay for, because these are often reimbursable.
  • Contact your insurance company: Report the damage within the timeframe your policy requires. Ask for a claim number and the name of the adjuster assigned to your case. Request clarification on your deductible and any documentation they'll need.
  • Schedule a professional inspection: Before the adjuster visits, have a qualified roofing contractor inspect the roof independently. Our team at Carter Exteriors provides detailed inspection reports with photos and measurements that serve as a second professional assessment alongside the adjuster's findings.
  • Meet the adjuster with your contractor: When possible, have your roofer present during the adjuster's visit. We can point out damage that may not be obvious to someone unfamiliar with specific roofing systems, and we can answer technical questions on the spot.
  • Review the estimate carefully: Compare the adjuster's scope of work to your contractor's assessment. If there's a significant gap, your contractor can provide supplemental documentation to support the full repair scope. This is a normal part of the process, not an adversarial one.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Don't sign a contract with a storm chaser who shows up at your door uninvited.
  • Don't wait weeks to report damage.
  • Don't make permanent repairs before the adjuster inspects.
  • Don't accept a low payout without having your contractor review the adjuster's estimate first.

Carter Exteriors doesn't make promises about what your insurance will cover, but we do provide the thorough documentation and professional support that gives your claim the strongest possible foundation. Learn more about our roof insurance claims assistance.

Why Documentation Matters for Storm Damage Claims

Here's what Carter Exteriors documents during every storm damage inspection:

  • Photographic evidence: High-resolution images of every damaged area, including close-ups that show granule displacement, cracking, bruising, lifted seams, and punctures
  • Written inspection reports: Detailed notes on the type, location, and severity of damage across each roof section
  • Hidden damage identification: Interior checks for water stains, damp insulation, and moisture readings in attic spaces
  • Moisture detection: We check underlayment and decking for moisture absorption that isn't visible from the surface
  • Before-and-after repair records: Photographs taken before, during, and after repairs to create a complete project history

How Rochester Weather Patterns Affect Your Roof

Rochester sits in one of the most demanding climates for roofing materials anywhere in the United States. The combination of weather patterns here creates a uniquely harsh environment that tests every component of a roof system.

Lake-effect weather off Lake Ontario brings localized, intense snowfall and ice events that can dump several inches in hours. These bursts create rapid snow loading and accelerate ice dam formation.

Freeze-thaw cycles are especially damaging in Rochester, where temperatures swing above and below freezing dozens of times between November and April. Each cycle expands and contracts water trapped in small cracks, gradually working openings in flashing, caulking, and shingle seals wider over time.

Spring and summer storms bring hail, heavy rain, and straight-line winds that frequently exceed 60 mph. The Finger Lakes region sees multiple severe thunderstorm warnings each summer, and each event puts roofing systems under sudden, intense stress.

Heavy rain exposure throughout the year means Rochester roofs must handle sustained moisture. Any weakness in the roofing system, whether a worn valley, a degraded boot, or a lifted shingle, will eventually fail under repeated saturation.

Carter Exteriors has repaired roofs throughout this area and knows which materials, installation methods, and maintenance practices hold up best against our specific weather.

How to Prevent Further Damage After a Storm?

The hours and days after a storm are critical. Delaying repairs, even by a week, can multiply the cost and scope of damage significantly. Here's why acting fast matters and what you can do while waiting for professional repair.

  • Emergency tarping covers exposed decking and prevents additional rain from entering the building. A properly installed tarp, secured with furring strips, can protect your home for weeks if permanent repairs are delayed by material lead times or weather.
  • Leak containment inside the home protects flooring, furniture, and electronics. Place containers under active drips and relocate valuables away from wet zones.
  • Attic monitoring reveals problems that aren't visible from living spaces. Check your attic after any major storm for wet insulation, damp rafters, or daylight showing through the decking.
  • Mold prevention starts immediately. Mold can begin colonizing damp building materials within 48 to 72 hours. Drying wet areas quickly and improving ventilation are essential steps.
  • Insulation protection is often overlooked. Wet attic insulation loses its thermal performance and adds weight to the ceiling structure. Saturated insulation usually needs to be removed and replaced, not simply dried.

The bottom line: a $500 emergency tarp installation can prevent $10,000 or more in interior damage. Contact our emergency roof repair team before the next rain makes things worse.

I cant say enough great things about Jim and his crew. Jim was very thorough during the initial process, helping me understand how the tear off was going to work and answering any of my question I had along the way whether in person or phone call. The crew was great and very efficient. Clean up was absolutely amazing.

I highly recommend this company. They came to my house at night on an emergency call when I had water leaking into my kitchen. They diagnosed and fixed it in the rain, in the dark. Very professional and fair price.

High level, yes I would definitely recommend Carter. Price, knowledge, quality of work, cleanup, all great. I am usually squeamish going with the low quote. Really paid off this time.

More detailed:
The sales process was great. It wasn't some random 20-something who had never been on a roof. Jim knew the business and process. I wanted a metal roof. He could have just gone with it but instead he really questioned me about why that was what I wanted. He wanted to be sure I would get the value out of the more expensive option. I even received a quote for a traditional asphalt roof in addition to the metal. They are out to get you the right solution for your application rather than the most expensive option.

I made the mistake of scheduling in the fall so project start got pushed a few times but that wasn't Carter's fault. They were pretty good about getting back to me when I called and didn't mind answering the same questions multiple times. Both Jim and the owner Austin were on site throughout the installation and cleanup to be sure everything was done right.

Overall, great quality, great experience.

We contacted four contractors for estimates and Carter Exteriors was the best deal. Their communication and customer service was outstanding. We had 20 square of shingles and 20 sheets of sheathing replaced. Their crew arrived at 7:30. They were curtious, polite, hard working. The roll off was in our driveway for less than 24 hours. All materials were delivered and installed the same day. Yard and gardens were cleaned and any evidence of a roof job were eliminated. The attention to detail regarding step flashing and double flashing around chimney were excellent. I would hire and recommend their company for any exterior job.

Frequently Asked Questions About  Storm Damage Roof Repair

1How quickly can Carter Exteriors respond to emergency roof damage?
For active leaks and structural exposure, we prioritize same-day response whenever possible. Our team is available 7 days a week, and we can typically have a crew on-site within hours for urgent situations. For non-emergency storm damage assessments, we usually schedule inspections within 1 to 2 business days.
2Does homeowner's insurance cover storm damage roof repair?
Most standard homeowner's insurance policies cover sudden storm damage from wind, hail, and fallen trees. Coverage typically applies to the cost of repair or replacement minus your deductible. However, policies vary, and damage caused by wear and tear or deferred maintenance is generally excluded. We recommend contacting your insurance company promptly after any storm and having a professional inspection completed before the adjuster visits.
3What should I do right after a storm damages my roof?
First, stay safe. Don't climb onto your roof. From the ground, take photos of any visible damage including missing shingles, debris, or leaks inside your home. Place containers under active drips to limit interior damage. Then call a professional roofing contractor and your insurance company. Prompt action protects both your home and your claim.
4How can I tell if my roof has hail damage?
From the ground, look for dents in gutters, downspouts, or metal vents. Check for dark spots on shingles where granules have been knocked loose. You might also notice granules accumulating in your gutters or at the base of downspouts more than usual. However, many signs of hail damage are only visible up close on the roof surface, which is why a professional inspection is important after any hailstorm.
5What is emergency roof tarping, and how long does it last?
Emergency tarping involves placing a heavy-duty waterproof tarp over damaged sections of the roof and securing it with furring strips, screws, or weighted anchor points. When properly installed, a tarp can protect an exposed area for several weeks, giving you time to coordinate insurance, source materials, and schedule permanent repairs. Tarping is considered a mitigation step, and many insurance policies reimburse the cost.
6Can wind damage a roof even if no shingles are missing?
Yes. Wind can lift shingle edges and break the sealant bond without tearing shingles off completely. These lifted shingles may lay back down after the wind stops, but the seal is permanently broken. The next rain or windstorm can then push water underneath. A professional inspection can identify lifted, creased, or poorly sealed shingles that look intact from the ground but are no longer providing protection.
7How much does storm damage roof repair cost?
Repair costs depend on the type and extent of damage, the roofing material involved, and whether structural components like decking or rafters are affected. A minor shingle repair might cost a few hundred dollars, while a large section replacement or a repair involving structural work could run several thousand. For insured claims, you typically pay your deductible and the insurance covers the balance. Carter Exteriors provides free inspections and detailed written estimates so you know the full scope before any work begins.
8Should I wait to see if my roof leaks before calling a roofer?
No. By the time a leak becomes visible inside your home, water has already traveled through the roofing system, underlayment, and potentially the decking and framing. Interior stains represent the end point of a water path that may have been active for days or weeks. Getting an inspection shortly after a storm identifies problems before they reach your living space and keeps repair costs lower.
