What Is Roof Installation?

Roof installation refers to the complete construction of a new roofing system from the deck up. Unlike a repair or shingle replacement, which addresses specific areas of damage, a full installation builds every layer of your roof's protection system: decking, underlayment, ice and water shield, flashing, ventilation, and the finished roofing material itself.

Roof installation applies in several situations:

  • New home construction where no roof exists yet
  • Home additions or extensions that require new roof sections
  • Full system builds where an aging roof needs to be stripped to the deck and rebuilt from scratch
  • Conversions such as switching from a flat roof to a pitched system, or upgrading from three-tab shingles to architectural shingles or metal

The distinction matters because a proper installation isn't just about nailing shingles to plywood. It's about designing a system where every component, from the drip edge at the eaves to the ridge cap at the peak, works together to keep water out and air circulating correctly. In Rochester's climate, that system design is the difference between a roof that lasts 15 years and one that lasts 50.

Our Roof Installation Process: 12 Steps From Start to Finish

We've refined our installation process over hundreds of projects across Rochester, Greece, Penfield, Webster, and Henrietta. Every step exists for a reason, and skipping any one of them leads to problems down the road. Here's exactly what happens when Carter Exteriors installs your new roof.

Initial Inspection and Planning

Before any work begins, one of our project managers visits your property to assess the existing roof structure (or the new build framing). We measure the roof area, evaluate the pitch and complexity, check for structural concerns, and discuss your goals and budget. This is also when we take photos and notes to build your project plan.

Material Selection and System Design

Based on the inspection, we recommend a roofing system tailored to your home. This includes the primary material (asphalt shingles, metal panels, or flat roofing membrane), the underlayment type, ventilation configuration, and flashing details. We walk you through color options, warranty tiers, and performance differences so you can make a confident decision.

Permit Acquisition

Roof installation in Monroe County requires a building permit. We handle the entire permit process on your behalf, submitting the application to the Town or City of Rochester building department, scheduling required inspections, and making sure every detail meets current New York State building code.

Tear-Off (When Applicable)

If there's an existing roof, our crew strips it down completely. We remove old shingles, underlayment, damaged flashing, and any deteriorated materials right down to the deck. Full tear-off is the only way to properly inspect the decking underneath and build a new system that performs correctly.

 Decking Inspection and Repairs

With the deck exposed, we inspect every inch of plywood or OSB sheathing for rot, water damage, soft spots, and structural issues. Any compromised decking gets replaced with new material before we move forward. This step catches hidden problems that would otherwise shorten your new roof's lifespan.

Underlayment Installation

We install ice and water shield along the eaves, valleys, and around all roof penetrations (chimneys, vents, skylights). Synthetic underlayment covers the remaining deck surface. In Rochester, where ice dams are a real concern, this layer is critical. It's your second line of defense if wind-driven rain or ice backup gets past the shingles.

Drip Edge and Flashing Setup

Metal drip edge goes along all eaves and rakes to direct water into the gutters and away from the fascia. Step flashing, counter flashing, and custom-fabricated pieces get installed around chimneys, walls, skylights, and any other penetrations. Flashing failures are the number-one source of roof leaks, so we take extra care here.

Roofing Material Installation

This is where your roof takes shape. Whether it's Owens Corning architectural shingles, standing seam metal panels, or a flat roofing membrane, every course is installed according to the manufacturer's specifications. Proper nailing patterns, overlap dimensions, and exposure settings are followed precisely because that's what keeps your warranty valid and your roof watertight.

Ridge Ventilation Installation

Balanced attic ventilation prevents moisture buildup, reduces ice dams, and extends shingle life. We install ridge vents along the roof peak paired with soffit intake vents to create continuous airflow. In Rochester's freeze-thaw climate, proper ventilation is not optional.

Final Sealing and Waterproofing

All penetration points, flashing edges, and transition areas receive a final round of sealant application. Pipe boots get fitted and sealed. Every detail that could allow water intrusion gets one more check and one more layer of protection.

Cleanup and Debris Removal

Our crew runs magnetic nail sweepers across your yard, driveway, and landscaping. All old roofing materials, packaging, and construction debris get loaded into the dumpster and hauled away. We treat your property like it's our own, and we don't leave until the job site is clean.

Final Walkthrough and Quality Check

A project manager walks the completed roof and reviews every detail with you from ground level. We point out key features, explain your maintenance schedule, review your warranty documentation, and answer any questions. You don't sign off until you're completely satisfied.

Material Options for New Roof Installation

Choosing the right roofing material affects everything: your home's appearance, energy efficiency, maintenance needs, and how long the roof lasts. Here are the three primary systems we install for Rochester homeowners.

  • Flat Roofing Systems

For homes with low-slope roof sections, porches, or attached garages, flat roofing systems provide reliable waterproofing where traditional shingles can't perform. We install EPDM rubber, TPO, PVC, and modified bitumen membranes for residential and commercial applications.
    • Ideal for sections with minimal pitch (less than 2:12)
    • Proper drainage design prevents ponding water
    • Multiple membrane options to match your budget and performance needs
    • 20 to 30-year lifespan with regular maintenance
    • Can be combined with pitched roof systems on the same home
  • Metal Roofing Systems

Metal roofing is gaining popularity across Western New York, and Rochester homeowners are choosing it for its longevity, energy efficiency, and ability to shed snow. Standing seam, corrugated, and stone-coated steel panels each offer different aesthetic and performance characteristics.
    • 50+ year lifespan with minimal maintenance
    • Excellent snow shedding, which reduces ice dam risk
    • Energy-efficient: reflects solar heat in summer, reducing cooling costs
    • High wind resistance (up to 140 mph for standing seam systems)
    • Available in a wide range of colors and panel profiles
  • Asphalt Shingle Roofing Systems

Asphalt shingles remain the most popular roofing choice in Rochester for good reason. They offer a strong balance of affordability, durability, and curb appeal. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we install their full line of architectural shingles, including the Duration series, which features their patented SureNail technology for superior wind resistance up to 130 mph.
    • Cost-effective option with excellent performance
    • Wide selection of colors and profiles to match any home style
    • Lifetime limited warranty available through Owens Corning
    • 25 to 50 years expected lifespan, depending on the product line
    • Well-suited to Rochester's temperature swings and precipitation

Rochester Weather and Why Installation Quality Matters

Rochester averages over 100 inches of snow per year, and our winters regularly push temperatures well below zero. That combination creates specific challenges that a properly installed roof must handle. Here's what your new roof is up against.

Wind Uplift

Rochester sits in a wind corridor that regularly produces gusts exceeding 50 mph during storms. Shingle nail placement, starter strip installation, and hip/ridge cap details all affect how well your roof resists uplift. Manufacturer-specified nailing patterns aren't suggestions; they're engineered requirements.

Moisture Infiltration

Between rain, snow, humidity, and condensation, your roof faces moisture from every direction, including from inside the attic. A complete roofing system addresses both exterior waterproofing (underlayment, flashing, sealants) and interior moisture control (ventilation, vapor barriers) to prevent rot and mold growth inside your roof assembly.

How Long Does a Roof Installation Take?

Most residential roof installations in Rochester take between one and three days from the start of tear-off to final cleanup. Here's what influences that timeline.

  • Roof size: A standard 1,500 to 2,500 square-foot home typically requires one to two days. Larger or multi-level homes may need three days or more.
  • Material type: Asphalt shingles install fastest. Metal panel systems and flat roof membranes require more time for precise fitting and fastening.
  • Roof detailing: Multiple valleys, dormers, skylights, chimneys, and steep pitches add time to every phase of the job.
  • Structural repairs: Rotted decking, damaged trusses, or code-required upgrades can add a half-day to a full day, depending on the scope.
  • Weather: We don't install in rain, heavy wind, or extreme cold. Rochester weather can shift fast, and we'd rather delay a day than compromise your roof's integrity.

We schedule projects with realistic timelines and communicate proactively if anything changes. You'll know what to expect before the first crew member arrives.

What to Expect on Installation Day

Installation day can feel overwhelming if you don't know what's coming. Here's a straightforward walkthrough so you can plan your day with confidence.

Permits and Building Codes in Rochester and Monroe County

In New York State, roof installation requires a building permit issued by your local municipality. Whether your home is in the City of Rochester, the Town of Greece, Henrietta, Webster, or Penfield, the process follows the same general framework.

What the Permit Process Involves

  • Submitting a permit application with project details and contractor information
  • Providing proof of contractor licensing and insurance
  • Meeting current International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC) requirements adopted by New York State
  • Scheduling a post-installation inspection by the local building department

Why This Matters to You

A permitted roof installation protects you in multiple ways. It confirms that the work meets structural and fire safety standards. It's required for valid homeowner's insurance claims. And it prevents legal complications when you sell your home. An unpermitted roof can derail a real estate transaction and void your insurance coverage.

Carter Exteriors handles every step of the permit process. We pull the permit, coordinate the inspection, and make sure your project is fully documented and code-compliant. It's one less thing you have to think about.

Want to verify your contractor's credentials? Check that they carry general liability insurance, workers' compensation coverage, and a valid New York State home improvement contractor registration. We carry all of the above and provide documentation on request.

Cost Factors for Roof Installation in Rochester

Every roof is different, and the cost of a new roof installation depends on several factors specific to your home. While we provide detailed quotes after an on-site inspection, here's what influences pricing so you can set realistic expectations.

Warranty and Long-Term Roof Protection

A roof installation is a significant investment, and the warranty behind it should give you real protection, not just peace of mind on paper. Here's what Carter Exteriors provides.

I highly recommend this company. They came to my house at night on an emergency call when I had water leaking into my kitchen. They diagnosed and fixed it in the rain, in the dark. Very professional and fair price.

High level, yes I would definitely recommend Carter. Price, knowledge, quality of work, cleanup, all great. I am usually squeamish going with the low quote. Really paid off this time.

More detailed:
The sales process was great. It wasn't some random 20-something who had never been on a roof. Jim knew the business and process. I wanted a metal roof. He could have just gone with it but instead he really questioned me about why that was what I wanted. He wanted to be sure I would get the value out of the more expensive option. I even received a quote for a traditional asphalt roof in addition to the metal. They are out to get you the right solution for your application rather than the most expensive option.

I made the mistake of scheduling in the fall so project start got pushed a few times but that wasn't Carter's fault. They were pretty good about getting back to me when I called and didn't mind answering the same questions multiple times. Both Jim and the owner Austin were on site throughout the installation and cleanup to be sure everything was done right.

Overall, great quality, great experience.

We contacted four contractors for estimates and Carter Exteriors was the best deal. Their communication and customer service was outstanding. We had 20 square of shingles and 20 sheets of sheathing replaced. Their crew arrived at 7:30. They were curtious, polite, hard working. The roll off was in our driveway for less than 24 hours. All materials were delivered and installed the same day. Yard and gardens were cleaned and any evidence of a roof job were eliminated. The attention to detail regarding step flashing and double flashing around chimney were excellent. I would hire and recommend their company for any exterior job.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roof Installation in Rochester, New York

1How much does roof installation cost in Rochester, NY?
The cost of a new roof installation in Rochester varies based on roof size, material choice, complexity, and any structural repairs needed. Asphalt shingle systems are the most budget-friendly, while metal roofing carries a higher upfront cost but lasts significantly longer. The best way to get an accurate estimate is to ,a href="/contact-us/">schedule a free on-site inspection with Carter Exteriors.
2How long does a roof installation take?
Most residential roof installations take one to three days, depending on the size of your roof, the material being installed, and the complexity of the project. Weather delays and unexpected structural repairs can extend the timeline by a day or more. We'll give you a realistic schedule before work begins.
3What is included in a new roof installation?
A complete roof installation from Carter Exteriors includes tear-off of the existing roof (if applicable), decking inspection and repair, ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment, drip edge and flashing, the roofing material itself, ridge ventilation, sealant application, full cleanup, and a final walkthrough. Permit acquisition and warranty registration are also included.
4Do I need a permit for roof installation in Rochester?
Yes. Roof installation in the City of Rochester and surrounding Monroe County municipalities requires a building permit. Carter Exteriors handles the entire permit process for you, including application, documentation, and coordinating the post-installation inspection with the local building department.
5What roofing material is best for Rochester's weather?
Owens Corning architectural shingles, particularly the Duration series, are an excellent choice for Rochester's freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow, and high winds. Metal roofing is another strong option for its durability and snow-shedding ability. Your best choice depends on your budget, aesthetic preferences, and long-term goals. We'll help you weigh the options during your consultation.
6What warranty comes with a new roof from Carter Exteriors?
We offer lifetime limited material warranties through Owens Corning on qualifying shingle systems, plus a 20-year workmanship warranty from Carter Exteriors. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we can also provide their Total Protection Roofing System warranty, which covers the entire system from shingles to ventilation.
7Can a new roof be installed in winter?
Yes, with precautions. Asphalt shingles can be installed in cold weather, but the shingles need to be stored in a warm environment and hand-sealed at the adhesive strips since they won't self-seal below approximately 40°F. Metal roofing installs well in cold temperatures. We monitor conditions closely and will not install during active precipitation, extreme cold, or unsafe wind. Rochester winters don't have to mean waiting until spring.
8How do I know if I need a new roof or just repairs?
If your roof has widespread damage, multiple active leaks, significant granule loss, sagging areas, or is approaching the end of its expected lifespan, a new installation is typically more cost-effective than ongoing repairs. A professional roof inspection will give you a clear picture of your roof's current condition and help you make an informed decision.
