You can find some of the most remarkable architectural feats across America, with architecture ranging from a little more far-fetched to extremely detailed. Buildings like the Thorncrown Chapel in Arkansas, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Empire State Building are great examples of excellent American architecture that you should look out for when visiting these cities.
However, while many people and tourists alike come from far and wide to marvel at these buildings, we’re casting our eyes up at the exquisite roofing designs. These are some of our favorite American roofing designs:
The Chrysler Building
The Chrysler Building is a remarkable skyscraper located in the Big Apple. Constructed in 1930, the Chrysler Building was one of the world’s first skyscrapers, reaching a height of 1047ft. The building’s breathtaking rooftop has a height of 925ft and a 122ft spire.
The building was designed by American architect William Van Alen and is considered one of the leading Art Deco architecture design styles. The most famous part of this historic architecture is its terraced crown, which comprises 28 terraced arches.
The Chrysler Building and its roof design have inspired buildings like the Empire State Building, One Liberty Place, and the Business Central Towers in Dubai.
The Thorncrown Chapel
The Thorncrown Chapel is renowned for its beautiful design and remarkable location. Located deep in the woods in Eureka Springs, the chapel is made primarily of wood and glass. Built and designed in 1980 by E. Fay Jones, the building was commissioned by Jim Reed to celebrate the magnificence of the Ozark Hills.
The chapel has a 48ft ceiling, and its roof is made out of vertical and diagonal cross-tension trusses, creating the dramatic folded roof of the chapel. The wood for the trusses was sourced from the woods surrounding the chapel. Being nearly entirely covered in glass, the chapel fits perfectly with its beautiful natural surroundings.
The Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel
The Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel will quite literally take your breath away. The spellbinding structure was designed in 1950 and completed in the decade to follow. Located in Colorado Springs, the elite design and execution was once a watershed moment in American architecture. Its advanced design was created during the high-stakes Cold War era and is considered one of the most expensive American federal projects.
The Chapel’s standout feature is the piercing spires, which are modeled after fighter jets. Each of its 17 glass and aluminum spires consists of 100 tetrahedrons. The chapel features a 900-seat Protestant church, a 500-seat Catholic church, and a 100 seat Jewish synagogue.
